The Pir Pasha Mosque of Lefke had been converted from a church into a mosque during the Arab raids. Cyprus was incorporated into Ottoman territory by the campaign of 1570\u20131571. Mehmet Bey, grandson of Pir Pasha, one of the viziers of Suleiman the Magnificent, also took part in that campaign. In the establishment of Turkish administration Mehmet Bey became governor of the Paphos sanjak, and Lefke was attached to it. On his visit to Lefke, Mehmet Bey saw this ruined mosque and rebuilt and restored this venerable building \u2014 whose lineage traces back to Abu Bakr \u2014 naming it Pir Pasha after his grandfather.<\/p>\n
