Lefke Municipality, established in April 1900, is the first Turkish municipality. Although there were Greek Cypriot council members, the mayors have always been Turkish Cypriots.

Serving only within the town centre before 1974, Lefke Municipality reached its present extent by incorporating Denizli, Gemikonağı and Yedidalga in 1975; Cengizköy, Yukarı Cengizköy and Yeşilyurt in 1993; Bağlıköy in 1998; Ömerli and Bademliköy in 1999; and Doğancı, Gaziveren, Yeşilırmak, Çamlıköy and Taşpınar in 2007.
