The first stage of the ''Save a Date Palm Too'' project, led by Lefke Municipality, the European University of Lefke, the Lefke Cooperative and the Lefke Tourism Association, has been completed.
According to a statement by the Lefke Tourism Association, in the first stage of this joint work 500 date palms were maintained and sprayed against the red palm weevil.
In the second stage, beginning next week, the spraying of all date palms in central Lefke and its villages will continue.
The statement noted that the Mountaineering Sports Association, which works on environmental sustainability and organises nature walks, had contributed to the “Save a Date Palm Too” project.
Lefke Tourism Association President Hasan Karlıtaş said their aim was to save all the date palms in the Lefke region and carry them into the future through an effective fight against the red palm weevil that threatens them.
Karlıtaş presented a plaque of thanks to Ergün Vudalı, President of the Mountaineering Sports Association, for his contribution to the project.
